High Quality Art Scanning

The time, effort, passion and creativity that goes into an original piece of art can sometimes create a strong attachment between the artist and their work. It becomes difficult to part with it after putting all the work into creating it.

The great thing about technology is that we can digitize the art for reproductions, archiving and/or digital marketing. It allows the artist to keep a copy of the artwork, and have the flexibility to do whatever they want to the file without damaging the original. If the artist sells the original they will still have the digital copy to create prints.

There are two ways you can digitize your artwork: scanning the artwork with a flatbed scanner or taking a photo with a high resolution camera.

At VancouverOnCanvas.com we offer high resolution art scanning for digitizing your artwork or large prints.

The texture and paint strokes are still visible in a digital scan.

The main concerns that most artists have is how accurate the scan will be to their original. This includes colour, detail and quality.

Scanners are calibrated to capture the true colour of the piece. If it isn't true to the original we also do colour correction with image editing software. This also requires a calibrated monitor for colour matching. A final step would be to print samples onto the media the final piece would be printed on to insure accuracy.

Scanning artwork can also bring out more visible details than the eye can see like the texture of the canvas or depth of a paint stroke. If these details are not something that you want highlighted we would need to do image processing to lessen it.

The quality of the image will generally be consistent with the original, and the resolution for scanners is relatively uniform. We scan at a minimum of 300DPI, which allows you to make a print that is larger than or the same size as the original print. We also can scan 600-1200DPI for larger reproductions. The final image quality is dependent on the print size and post processing. However, with a high resolution scan and post-processing methods it will be almost identical to the original.

We will scan your image as-is, without any colour correction or post processing done to it. The scan will look 80-90% true to the original. If you have experience with editing software you can easily adjust the contrast and colour balance of the scan. For a fee, we can do digital colour matching with test strips.

The result of a good color match.
