Artist Spotlight: Michael Halbert with his Craft Brewery Artwork

Happy Friday everyone!

Before you head off for some weekend cheers and drinks, we were wondering...do any of these images look familiar to you?

If they do, it's probably because you have seen them at some point while you wander Vancouver - perhaps at a restaurant, or passing by Gastown...

Ta-dah!! For today's feature, we'd like to cast the spot on scratchboard artist Michael Halbert, who gives this local favourite its recognizable charm!

Michael Halbert is by far one of my art idols. His specialty is in scratchboard illustration, a process in which the image comes alive through the artist scratching the lines off, revealing the negative space. The amount of detail and precision that is in his work is absolutely mindblowing, and I just had to share and spread the love.

If you are unfamiliar with his work, you can find some of his most iconic pieces on the branding of Vancouver-based craft brewery "Steamworks". Check out his magic below:

Art! Vancouver 2016

Art! Vancouver, the city's largest fine arts fair, returns for its sophomore year to the Vancouver Convention Centre.

After last year's highly successful inaugural event, Art! Vancouver once again connects the international art community beneath the Sails, building on last year's success of 130 exhibitors and 9,000 attendees. This year, organizer Lisa Wolfin expects to attract more than ten thousand attendees. This event is the place to be for west coast art aficionados with over one hundred exhibiting artists showcasing all manner of styles and media. For collectors, it provides the opportunity to view the works of local up-and-coming and established artists, and to be among the first to get it on hot new art. Artists will have the chance to sell their work and meet potential curators and gallerists.


Kirsten Nash   An exciting event will make its return this year, the signature Face of Art Runway, opening night Thursday, May 26, where artists will represent both their art and personalities on the catwalk!


Photo Matt Wayrynen   The fair also features talks on fine art appraisals, by Jim Finlay, and the business of art, by Paul Constable, as well as numerous other artists and professionals of the art world.
Most importantly, Art! Vancouver will be the event to see and be seen in next weekend, so expect to mingle over some fine art with plenty of bars on hand.

Art!Vancouver : Vancouver's First and Largest Art Exhibition

One of Vancouver's largest fine art exhibitions will take place from Thursday May 21st to Sunday May 24th at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The event is hosted by Art! Vancouver, and will be featuring talented artist from all over the world! The event will be an amazing platform for showcasing artworks of talented up-incoming and seasoned artists. It will also be a networking hub for everyone in the fine art community, and a great way to connect with collectors and art appreciators. 

This is the first event of its kind in Vancouver and will also feature prominent guest speakers in the art community. Local, national and international artists will participate in the 4-day event to exhibit some of the most creative, original and innovative artwork in the world. Art!Vancouver's goal is to connect the fine art community and mark Vancouver as a diverse and exciting art destination in the world.
