Gerry Thompson’s Artistic Journey

One of the best things about living in Vancouver for art enthusiasts is an easy access to many art exhibits, installations and connections within art-related industries. And you can never know that your neighbor could end up a talented entrepreneur. In one of the quiet Vancouver suburbs lives Gerry Thompson, a Canadian artist who has spent over two decades with a paint brush in her hands. Ever since Gerry was a child, she showed high interest in the artistic world and dedicated her teenage and adolescent years to music. She professionally plays multiple instruments, including piano, synthesizer and violin. She dedicated several years of her life to teaching, in a small college in Alberta, where she got her Associate Degree from the Royal Conservatory of Music as a Solo Performer in piano. Later on her love for painting and experimenting was getting increasingly higher and with her major in Painting and Printmaking she was able to teach watercolor in the Continuing Education Department of the College for over seven years, right after she came back to Vancouver.

Her three main passions were always intertwining with one another as the love for music, painting and teaching have been granting her happiness and inner peace , by giving her purpose to grow and develop.

Gerry performs her art pieces in a variety of mediums, such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, and mixed media. Her works are being made in realism style, but tends to play with shapes, shadows and create her naturalistic works through abstract lighting and shapes. Gerry’s paintings have an incredibly light and colorful feel, as they perfectly elaborate the theme, mood and atmosphere of the given environment. Many of her works were inspired by marine beauty of British Columbia, and busy streets of Gastown, as well as botanical beauties and everyday “still life” captures. In some of her works, the audience could recognize warm and steamy European streets, which were made by Ms. Thompson during her stay in Italy, Fabriano, where she got one of many awards and even was one out of 12 Canadian artists invited to perform their art at  the International exhibit.

Gerry is not only a talented artist but a very wise mentor who has a lot to give to those who are only getting started in the wonderful world of art. Several things that she made sure to say to her students were always encouraging and motivating. Firstly, Gerry does not believe in the “I do not have a talent” mentality, as with desire, dedication and effort, anybody is capable of achieving their goal and mastering the skill. Secondly, one piece of advice that she gives to her students after busting their confidence with her first statement is to start small and simple. By choosing to level up with art geniuses or pick a difficult element to capture, you will put yourself up for failure and will most likely quit. In her “artist’s statement”, Gerry mentioned, “Paint the easy stuff first. The rest usually takes care of itself. Paint what you see, not what you think you see”, which inspired a lot of people to face their fear and proceed with their dreams.

Gerry Thomson is by far one of the most interesting and dimensional artists, living in Vancouver. Her passion to create and leave knowledge and beauty after herself is extremely inspiring and bright. Her talented works were able to sell all around the world and get recognized by many critics in the industry. Currently, she keeps on teaching others in “Thompson's Studio,” in Abbotsford, BC and continues coming up with new masterpieces that are going to ‘wow” the art world.
